How to Get the Most Out of "Light to the Nations I: A History of Christian Civilization, Christ to 1750, Part Two" with Christopher Zehnder:

  • PLEASE NOTE: The Teacher's Manual removes the necessity of grading support for this course. It is very comprehensive.
  • Obtain the teacher's manual for Light to the Nations I: The History of Christian Civilization. The manual includes answer keys for the end-of-chapter exercises for each chapter as well as sample quizzes and tests for each chapter, with answer keys. You may find the teacher's manual along with the text at http://cstp.myshopify.com/collections/light-to-the-nations-part-ii-the-making-of-the-modern-world. Both are available in printed form as well as in ebook format.
  • Go over the assigned reading and do the review questions for each class before listening to the recording. (A parent may wish a student to write out his or her answers to the review questions, though the course does not require it.)
  • At least two quizzes are available for every chapter, each quiz covering a portion of the chapter. A parent may use these to assess his student's progress.
  • Listen to the recorded class, which covers the main points of each chapter, and give added insights into the period studied. Students might take notes – this is a good exercise in developing a skill that will be of use in college.
  • Once the student completes the chapter and listens to the class recording, a parent may wish to use the chapter test to evaluate what the the student has learned.
  • If there are any questions, please feel free to contact the course presenter and author of Light to the Nations I: The History of Christian Civilization, Christopher Zehnder, at editor@CatholicTextbookProject.com.
  • Make sure to record all your grades. Homeschool Connections does not proved record keeping.

Course Description: This course examines how Christendom – the society founded on the Catholic Church and her Faith – came to be. It looks at the cultural, intellectual, historical, and religious foundations upon which Christendom was raised. It then examines the events of the Reformation through the beginnings of the 18th century – the period when the unity of Christendom in the Catholic faith was shattered. The course is divided into two parts. Part One (first semester) begins with a brief review of history before the birth of Christ and continues to the period of the Medieval Reformation in the 11th and 12th centuries. Part Two (second semester) continues the story, from the rise of nation states in the Middle Ages to about 1750.

Course Materials: The text for the course (both Part One and Part Two) is Light to the Nations I: The History of Christian Civilization, published by and available from www.catholictextbookproject.com. Purchase the teacher's manual for answer keys. Both the text and the teacher's manual are available in book form or as an eBook.

Homework: Students read assigned portions of the text. Lectures focus on those events and ideas that are the keys for understanding the historical periods under consideration.

Answer Key: Answer keys are not provided with this course and must be purchased in the teacher's manual. Short essay quiz will be graded by a parent or tutor.
