Join fellow students and Mr. Campbell to uncover the teachings of the Second Vatican Council. We will study the council documents as well as the key players and events leading up to the council.

  • Prepare a notebook for notetaking and homework.
  • Watch the recording for the class.
  • Next, students should click on the Homework and complete the work in your notebook or on your computer.
  • Answer keys are provided for self correction or for parents to grade homework.
  • If you need review, go back and watch the recording again and/or go over the Power Point.
  • Repeat until all 4 classes are complete.
  • Note: Links to additional resources may be provided for some classes.
  • Once the course is completed to the parent's satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records. Make sure to record your grade for your homeschool transcript.

Course description: This course will guide students through the history of the tumultuous years surrounding the Second Vatican Council. We will study the important events and persons of the Conciliar years and dig into the sixteen documents promulgated by the Council, including Lumen Gentium, Sacrosanctum Concilium, Gaudium et Spes, Nostra Aetete, and Dei Verbum.

Course outline:

Class 1: The pontificate of Pope John XXIII and the calling of the Council
Class 2: The Church and the world: Lumen Gentium and Gaudium et Spes
Class 3: Nostra Aetate, Dei Verbum and Sacrosanctum Concilium
Class 4: Years of uncertainty: a look at the aftermath of the Council and an assessment of its successes and shortcomings.
