How to get the most out of Spanish I, Part One:

  • First review the introductory materials listed below.
  • For each week you will work in all the assignments first and then you will attend and participate in the live class.
  • Every week your assignments will be:
    • Vocabulary, grammar class video, grammar homework (online quizzes), speaking exercises, and memorization exercises.
  • Some weeks will also have:
    • Workbook pages, pronunciation class video, pronunciation homework (recordings), and reading/listening practice as well. 
  • And remember, for each week the materials will be listed in the order they should be completed.
  • When you watch the grammar videos and the pronunciation videos, take notes and study them. Also have a notebook ready for the live class.
  • A recording of the live class will be posted on Moodle within 24 hours after the class ends. Watch the recording if you need to revisit information from the live session or  If you missed the live class.
  • The final thing is to practice, practice, practice!
  • Once the course is completed, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records.

Special Notes: This is Part One of a 2-part course. Students are expected to sign up for Part Two in the spring. Due to the popularity of this course, it is offered in two different time segments. Choose the time that works best for your homeschool. Mrs. Schmitt provides an additional 18 recorded lectures to the live classes.
The instructor will provide activities to learning alive during the break in between the fall and spring semesters.

Course Description: This is an introductory course to the Spanish language and covers the basics of Spanish as a second language. In this course, the student will learn the meaning, pronunciation and spelling of common vocabulary and basic Spanish grammar.

The course teaches the meaning and pronunciation of the alphabet, words and phrases. It emphasizes how to write sentences in Spanish using articles, nouns and adjectives, and it provides an understanding of number and gender and the relationship between them. The course also teaches  how to write questions and answers using interrogative words such as  ¿Qué? ¿Quién? ¿Dónde? ¿Cuándo? ¿Cuánto? and introduces the student to the conjugation of regular verbs in the present tense.  By the end of Part I, the student will be able to understand and write simple dialogs in Spanish.

Course Materials: Spanish Middle / High School (Skills for Success): ISBN 088724758X (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/088724758X/). This is a workbook to provide extra grammar exercises to the students.

Homework: Through repetition and memorization of common phrases as well as by watching videos and PowerPoint presentations, listening to audios, completing workbook pages and other assignments posted on Moodle, the student will learn and practice new vocabulary and basic grammar.

During the week prior to each class, the student will be required to watch a video of Spanish grammar and complete a quiz. During the live class, students will interact with the teacher and each other to practice what they learned in the video and have the opportunity to ask questions.

Every other week, the students will be asked to watch a video of Spanish pronunciation. They will learn and practice how to pronounce a specific sound in Spanish in each class and will be asked to practice a list of words and record them. During the next live class, the pronunciation of these words will be reviewed.
Students should assign at least one hour every day to practice their Spanish.
