Have you ever wondered what the Saints prayed about? How they talked to God? In the Confessions, Saint Augustine shares not only his story, (including his sins, mistakes, and missteps) but also the conversation he had with God about it all! Join me for a tour of the life of one of the greatest Saints and learn how his conversation with God led to a spiritual classic (that reads like an adventure novel!) that has been touching and changing the lives of people for centuries!

Course description: The Confessions of Saint Augustine is one of the most popular books of all time and has been touching lives for centuries. There are many translations available in most every language, and yet it can still be a challenge to read, especially for those unfamiliar with the style of writing at the time. In this course we will walk through the Confessions week by week, reading and discussing it together. The goal of this course is two-fold: to help students understand, and apply the wisdom contained in this work, and to give them tools to be able to continue drawing from this source of wisdom on their own after class.
Course Outline:
Week One: Who is Saint Augustine and Why Did He Write the Confessions?
Week Two: Book One
Week Three: Books Two and Three
Week Four: Books Four and Five
Week Five: Book Six
Week Six: Book Seven
Week Seven: Book Eight
Week Eight: Book Nine
Week Nine: Book Ten
Week Ten: Book Eleven
Week Eleven: Book Twelve
Week Twelve: Book Thirteen and Wrap Up
Course materials: The Confessions of Saint Augustine translated by John Ryan. ISBN# 0385029551 (https://amzn.to/3IlaqnQ). The John Ryan translation is required for ease of understanding and so that all students are reading the same text.
Homework: Each class students will write a short summary, explaining in their own words what we covered in that session. There will be a final quiz at the end of the course that includes multiple-choice, true/false questions, and short essays. An answer key is not included in this course.
