Course description: This course is a general study of the political history of Australia. It will cover pre-European aboriginal culture and settlements, the arrival of Europeans, the colonization of Australia, the period of colonial self-government, the growth of Australian democracy towards Dominion status, Australia in world affairs, and contemporary issues in Australian society. We will also discuss the role of the Catholic Church in Australian history.

Week 5: Colonial Self-Government

Week 6: The Commonwealth: 1901-1929

Week 7: The Commonwealth: 1929-1945

Week 8: The Liberal Age (1949-1972)

Week 9: The Indigenous Peoples’ Civil Rights Movement

Week 10: Labor Resurgence and Realignment (1972-1996)

Week 11: Australia in the post-Cold War era

Week 12: Contemporary Issues in Australian Society

Course materials: All course materials will be provided FREE by the instructor. An answer key is not provided for this course.

Homework: Homework will consist of class readings provided by the instructor as well as regular online quizzes graded automatically by computer for immediate feedback to the student. Estimated time commitment per class is 1.5 hours outside of the recorded class.
