Course description: Both in the Old and New Testament the image of the End of Time (the Apocalypse, the Millenium) has influenced world history and culture…sometimes in good ways and sometimes in bad. In this course, we will examine the historical and cultural effects of the idea of the End of the World from Biblical times to the present day. Indeed, the idea of an imminent “millennium” is one of the most influential forces in today’s political struggles. Our goal is to have a better understanding of how the history of “apocalypticism” has shaped present day cults, conspiracy theories, politicians, and beliefs.
