Join Part 2 of the brand-new college preparatory course studying the world of pathogenic microorganisms, their role in human disease and immunology, and treatment of infectious diseases. Learn about viruses, bacteria, disease, and more. An excellent course for those going on in the sciences.

How to get the most out of Microbiology, Part Two with Christine Hamilton:

  • First, read the course materials below before the first class meeting.

  • Then have a notebook ready and available for class notes each live session.

  • Read assignments before class meetings

  • Watch that week’s recording if you need to revisit information from our live session.

Course Description:  Let’s enter the world of pathogenic microorganisms, studying their role in human disease and immunology. By the end of Part 2 you’ll gain an understanding of microbial infection, parasitology, viruses, the interaction between microbe and host, and preventative measures. You’ll be able to describe the symptoms, causative agent, pathogenesis, epidemiology, prevention and treatment for the infectious diseases studied.

Course Outline:

  • Week 1 Virus Structure

  • Week 2 Virus Life Cycle

  • Week 3 Meet the Microbes: Viruses

  • Week 4 Microbial Growth

  • Week 5 Immunology: Non-Specific

  • Week 6 Immunology: Specific

  • Week 7 Biology of Bacteria

  • Week 8 The Disease Process

  • Week 9 Fungal Infections

  • Week 10 Foodborne Disease

  • Week 11 Bloodborne Disease

  • Week 12 Antimicrobial Drugs

Course Materials: Students will be provided with materials and online resources free.

Homework Expect to spend approximately two-plus hours each week outside of

the classroom on vocabulary study, reading, online assignments and quizzes.

Vocabulary is assigned alongside the weekly reading for better understanding of the

material and to prepare the student for the live lecture. Most of the computer-

graded quiz material is based on vocabulary, what is presented in class and the

homework assignments. The sequence of events for each week are as follows:

  1. Read the assigned reading in the provided WordDoc

  2. Write the provided vocabulary words in your notebook

  3. Come to class

  4. Complete the weekly online assignment

  5. Take the weekly computer graded quiz
