How to get the most out of Introduction to Catholicism 101, Part One: Fundamentals of the Faith with Trent Horn:

  • First, watch the class lecture with a notebook ready and available for class notes.
  • Read assignments before class recordings.
  • Do the assignments, quizzes, and any extra work assigned for that class.
  • Once the course is completed to the parent's and professor’s satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records.

Special notes:

This is Part One of a 2-part course. Students are expected to sign up for Introduction to Catholicism 101, Part Two: Introduction to the New Testament 101 (The Gospels) in the spring semester, or any one of the other courses in the Introduction to Catholicism series.

Fundamentals of the Faith is part of the Introduction to Catholicism series. If students would like to take the full series of three courses (two parts each) they can enroll concurrently or consecutively with Introduction to Catholicism 102 and/or Introduction to Catholicism 103 courses. Courses in this series may be taken in any order.

Total classes: 11

Duration: 30 minutes per class. Plus, 12 40-minute pre-recorded lectures.

Suggested grade level: 9th to 12th grade

Course description: This course will follow a “flipped-classroom” approach. Each class students will watch Mr. Horn’s 40-minute pre-recorded lecture before watching the 30-minute class recording that will be an engaging Q&A with the students.

Fundamentals of Faith will cover Part One of the Catechism of the Catholic Church with an emphasis on God, Divine Revelation, the Trinity, and the Catholic Church.

Class 3: One God in three persons

Class 4: God the creator

Class 5: The creation and fall of man

Class 6: The Incarnation

Class 7: Christ’s earthly ministry

Class 8: Christ’s death and resurrection

Class 9: The Holy Spirit and the Church

Class 10: The Catholic Church

Class 11: The Catholic Church II

Homework:

1. Watch the recorded lecture.

2. Class reading of approx. 20 pages of the Catechism and 5-10 pages of Why We’re Catholic.
