Course Description: "Age of Faith" will focus on the formative period of the Middle Ages, from the Edict of Milan to the defeat of the Muslim armies at Tours. Students will learn how the Roman Empire morphed into the kingdoms of medieval Europe, how the Catholic Church helped shape the development of these kingdoms, and about the most prominent men, women, and saints who shaped the culture.

  • Week 5: Benedictine Moment

  • Week 6: The Merovingians

  • Week 7: Saxon England

  • Week 8: Justinian's Conquests

  • Week 9: The Crusades

  • Week 10: The Christianization of Germany

  • Week 11: Old Slavonia

  • Week 12: The Muslim Eruption

 

Course Materials: Primary texts provided free online by the instructor.

Homework: Homework will consist of weekly readings and online quizzes (graded by the computer for immediate feedback), as well as occasional essay questions based on the readings. Estimated time commitment is 2-3 hours per week outside of class.
