How to get the most out of Christ the King, Lord of History, Part 2 with Christopher Martin, Ph.D.:

  • Download the pre-course materials (e.g., syllabus) found at the end of the course introduction, but before the weekly materials.
  • Review the week's PowerPoint slides before attending the class meeting.
  • Have a notebook ready and available for class notes during each class meeting.
  • Attend the week's meeting.
  • Do the assignments, quizzes, and any extra work assigned for that week.
  • Repeat the above for each week.
  • Once the course is completed to the parent's and professor’s satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records

Course Description: Using Anne Carroll's Christ the King, Lord of History as a framework and guide for a year-long study, this course roughly traces Christendom through the years 1500-1990. This includes the Reformation; Counter-Reformation; the Enlightenment; French Revolution; European Communism; and Pope Saint John Paul II.

    • Week 1: Introduction and overview of syllabus and assignments

    Weeks 2-6: "The Cleaving of Christendom"

    • Week 2: Medieval Synthesis, Luther

    • Week 3: The English Reformation 

    • Week 4: Calvinist Reformation 

    • Week 5: Counter Reformation 

    • Week 6: England and Spain 

    Weeks 7-10 : "The Revolution against Christendom"

    • Week 7:  The English Civil War 

    • Week 8: The Glorious Revolution

    • Week 9: The Enlightenment 

    • Week 10: The French Revolution

    Weeks 11-14: "The Crisis of Christendom"

    • Week 11: The Revolution Expands

    • Week 12: Imperialism and WWI

    Homework: 

    1. Approximately 15 pages, per week, of reading from the textbook. (Note: Middle school students taking this course are exempt from the readings.)

    2. Writing is an integral part of demonstrating both the assimilation of knowledge, and the articulation thereof. Therefore, students will be guided through the process of writing a short (3-5 page, double-spaced) review of a book of their choice relevant to the subject matter. (Note: Middle school students taking this course must instead write a 1-2 page book report.)

    3. Weekly, review, extra-credit, quizzes based on classroom lectures and discussions.
