How to get the most out of American Literature: Part Two

  1. Read assigned literature prior to watching each class meeting.
  2. Have a notebook, your novel, and any shorter works assigned with you while you watch each recording.
  3. Do the assignments, quizzes, and any extra work assigned for that week

 

This is Part Two of a two-part course (12 weeks of classes). Take American Literature Part One to receive one full year of high school credit.

 Total Classes: 13

Duration: 55 minutes

Prerequisite: No class prerequisite. Students should have the basic paragraph and essay writing skills. 

Suggested Grade Level: 9th-12th

Suggested Credit: 1 semester (This is a two-part course; take American Literature Part One to receive one full year of credit.)

 Course Description: American Literature Part Two: Reconstruction through Present Day is a survey course in American Literature covering works written by and about Americans from Post Civil War Reconstruction to modern times. Class meetings will use both lecture and Socratic discussion to engage students in both the history and the art of American Literature.

Course Materials: Full length works (unabridged) required for student purchase:

  1. The Sea Wolf by Jack London

  2. The Virginian by Owen Wister

  3. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

  4. Various short works including poetry, short fiction, and prose will be provided for free as PDF files.

Homework: Weekly quizzes and reading assignments. Approximately 2-3 hours of homework per week. Optional author project.
