How to get the most out of High School Health, Part II: Personal Nutrition  with Dr. Kerrie Berends:

  • First, read the course details below.

  • Prepare a notebook for note taking and homework.

  • Students begin the course by clicking on the "Recording" and watching the instructor's lecture for Class One.

  • Complete the Week One Activities.

  • If you need review, go back and watch the recording again and/or go over the Powerpoint.

  • Repeat until all classes are complete.

  • Once the course is completed to the parent's satisfaction, there is a Certificate of Completion at the end to be filled in for your records. Homeschool Connections does not provide record keeping.  PLEASE NOTE that there is an Answer key for the quizzes and Grades will not populate in Moodle. You will need to keep your own record of grades for this course.

Prerequisite: None, but it is highly recommended that you take High School Health Part I: Personal Fitness first.

Suggested Grade Level: 9 - 12

Suggested Credit: 1/2 semester Health Science or Nutrition. Combine with Part I for a full semester credit in Health Science.

Course Description: High School Personal Nutrition is a 7-week course covering all health-related aspects of nutrition. Students will be introduced to macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, and proteins) as well as micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). Additional topics will include hydration, alcohol, nutrition-related obesity, and personal nutrition assessment. This course is designed to be taken immediately AFTER High School Personal Fitness, which is a companion course in equal length. Both courses together meet the requirements for a 1 semester high school health credit.

  • Week 1: Balancing Nutrition: Recommended Dietary Guidelines and Reading Labels
  • Week 2: Carbohydrates: Fuel for our Brains and Bodies
  • Week 3: Fats: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
  • Week 4: Proteins: Sources and Importance
  • Week 5: Micronutrients: Vitamins and Minerals
  • Week 6: Hydration and Alcohol
  • Week 7: Putting it all Together to Meet your Personal Dietary Needs

Course Materials: Students will need to purchase ACSM's Complete Guide to Fitness & Health-2nd Edition (the same book used in High School Health, Part I)  ISBN-10: 149253367X or ISBN-13: 978-1492533672 (www.bookfinder.com or https://amzn.to/2T7OfYU). Additional online readings from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics https://www.eatright.org/ will be assigned.

Homework: Students will have weekly assigned readings, fill-in-the-blank worksheets/study guides, a nutrients tracking activity, and a weekly quiz (answer key available for parents).  PLEASE NOTE that there is an Answer key for the quizzes and Grades will not populate in Moodle. You will need to keep your own record of grades for this course.
